March 22, 2006 Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) today released two new brochures on its Bulk Metal® foil resistors. Ultra-High-Precision Current Sensing Bulk Metal Foil Resistors and Ultra-High-Precision Bulk Metal Foil Resistors for Advanced Medical Applications, Treatment Solutions, and Biotechnology describe the challenges inherent in current sensing and in medical and biotechnology applications, and explain how Vishay's proprietary foil resistor technology provides a variety of solutions. Invented by Dr. Felix Zandman in 1962, Bulk Metal foil resistors were the first products manufactured and marketed by Vishay. As Vishay has grown to become one of the world's largest manufacturers of discrete semiconductors and passive electronic components, Dr. Zandman, who founded Vishay and now serves as Chairman of the Board, Chief Technical Officer, and Chief Business Development Officer, has spearheaded ongoing improvements to the original Bulk Metal foil resistor product line. One recent improvement, Z Foil, provides an absolute temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of only 0.2 ppm/°C. The importance of TCR is discussed in great detail in Ultra-High-Precision Current Sensing Bulk Metal Foil Resistors. As the key parameter used to specify a resistor's stability, TCR expresses the change in resistance due to a change in the ambient temperature. Current sensing resistor applications are further complicated by changes in resistance due to self-heating (Joule effect) during application of power. The brochure covers these and other issues in great detail, and discusses how Bulk Metal foil resistors can be used to overcome them. The Ultra-High-Precision Current Sensing Bulk Metal Foil Resistors brochure is available on the Vishay Web site at http://www.vishay.com/doc?49460. Ultra-High-Precision Bulk Metal Foil Resistors for Advanced Medical Applications, Treatment Solutions, and Biotechnology explains why Bulk Metal foil resistors are the preferred resistors for medical applications including non-invasive equipment, imaging equipment and systems, and biological implants. The brochure lists the features of benefits of both surface-mount and through-hole foil Vishay resistors. The surface-mount foil resistors include wraparound, flip chip, molded, and power current sensing types, as well as hermetic networks and voltage dividers and networks. The through-hole foil resistors include molded; molded and hermetic power current sensing; molded and hermetic voltage dividers; hermetic sealed networks; and hermetic ultra-precision modules with almost zero TCR. Real-world examples of foil resistors in cardiac mapping systems, tomography applications, and miniature sensors are also presented. The Ultra-High-Precision Bulk Metal Foil Resistors for Advanced Medical Applications, Treatment Solutions, and Biotechnology brochure is available on the Vishay Web site at http://www.vishay.com/doc?49466. To obtain printed copies of either brochure, please contact the appropriate Vishay literature distribution center listed below.
